Students from Waddell and Lylburn Downing participated in the first regional chess tournament of the school year in Roanoke on Nov. 4.
The Waddell team finished in first place in the K-5 (elementary school) section of the tournament, and the Lylburn Downing team finished in first place in the K-8 (middle school) section. Both schools’ first place finishes were consistent with a decade-long tradition of Lexington chess players finishing in first place in team competitions.
Most of the students from Lexington also won trophies for their individual performances. Representing Waddell, Jhossel Soriano Caceres finished in first place overall, with a perfect score of four wins in four rounds. Harry Loughhead finished in fifth place, and Caleb Rodocker finished in sixth place.
Representing Lylburn Downing, Elliott Allen finished in first place overall, with a perfect score of four wins in four rounds. Graham Shester finished in second place, Alex Eastwood finished in third place, and Rossel Soriano Caceres finished in fifth place.
