Steve Potter and Randy Leech were two of the 45 Virginians chosen to attend the 1973 National 4-H Congress in Chicago. - Virginia Military Institute officials defended the school’s record in recruiting black students after the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare found alleged shortcomings in such efforts at VMI and Madison College. - The Virginia Electric and Power Co. announced plans to remove the Balcony Falls Hydroelectric Dam on the James River below Glasgow.

Mayor John Knapp broke a tie vote at a Lexington City Council Meeting voting in favor of allowing Washington and Lee University to build an art and music facility adjacent to the Lenfest Center. - Heavy rains reminiscent of Hurricane Isabel saturated the area causing streams to rise and roads to flood.
