The Washington and Lee University men’s soccer team won a shoot-out with Colorado College in the NCAA Division III national quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon in Medford, Mass.

The Washington and Lee University men’s soccer team won a shoot-out with Colorado College in the NCAA Division III national quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon in Medford, Mass.

After 110 minutes of play yielded a scoreless draw, W&L sophomore goalkeeper Will Joseph came up with two saves in six Colorado College penalties to send the Generals (154-5) past the Tigers (16-4-1) and into the national semifinals for the second time in the last three seasons.

W&L won the penalty shoot-out 5-4, with scores coming from Willy Hall, Dmitri Tulloch, Lucas Pleasants and Weyimi Agbeyegbe before PJ Ryan kicked the go-ahead shot to the middle of the frame. Colorado College’s Rex Karjian then attempted a shot to the left post, but Joseph confidently dove that way, reached back slightly and batted the ball back towards the penalty spot to secure the win for W&L.

Joseph finished the 110 minutes of regulation and overtime play with three saves before his four stops in the shoot-out. The clean sheet was his ninth of the season.

The Generals advanced to the quarterfinals by defeated 20th-ranked Tufts 1-0 on Saturday, also in Medford, Mass.

W&L sophomore Matteo Adler found the back of the net in the 49th minute, giving the Generals all they needed to advance.

In goal, Joseph made three saves, including two late in the second half.

For the national semifinals, the Generals will take a much shorter trip to face 13th-ranked Amherst (17-2-3) in Salem on Friday, Dec. 1, at 6:30 p.m. The championship game will take place in Salem on Sunday, Dec. 3, at noon.
