A Buena Vista woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Halifax County on Nov. 18.
Soriah R. Lunt, 23, died at the scene of the accident. Her husband, Matthew McCubbins, was also injured.
According to the Virginia State Police, at approximately 8:19 p.m., a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling north on U.S. 501 near Stage Coach Road. The Jeep crossed into the southbound travel lane to pass the vehicle in front of it. As it did so, the Jeep encountered a 2004 Honda Civic traveling in the southbound lane. Both vehicles swerved to try and avoid one another, but ended up striking each other head on. The vehicle that was being passed was not involved in the crash.
The driver of the Honda, McCubbins, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious, but non-lifethreatening, injuries. The only passenger in the Honda, Lunt, died at the scene. She was wearing a seat belt.
The driver and five passengers in the Jeep were all transported to nearby hospitals for treatment of serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation. Charges are pending, according to the state police.
Since the accident, a GoFundMe page has been set up to support McCubbins by the McCubbins and Lunt families, which had raised nearly $38,000 by this past Monday.
The post on the page says, “The abruptness of this tragedy has not only thrown Matt into deep grief but has also confronted him with immediate and substantial financial challenges.
