Lexington students and staff participated in World Kindness Day earlier this month.
“We felt that this was a great opportunity for us to bring a little kindness and joy to others,” Rebecca Walters, district superintendent, told The News-Gazette.
Waddell Elementary had several activities for students.
“Waddell Elementary School counselor Maggie Wilson and Principal Kim Troise facilitated several activities for our students and faculty at Waddell. Students painted kindness rocks during recess. The rocks will be placed in a ‘rock garden’ area in front of the school,” said Walters.
“Students also got to visit a kindness booth where they could hand out sentiments of kindness to others and they could also recognize acts of kindness during the day. Teachers and staff wore tshirts with various messages of kindness on Monday (Nov. 13),” she said.
At Lylburn Downing Middle School, this day was an opportunity to recognize a recently deceased local teacher.
“At the middle school, students and staff celebrated “Wear Orange Day for Mr. Burch” in recognition of longtime, beloved PE teacher, Mike Burch, who lost his battle with cancer this fall,” said Walters.
“One of Mr. Burch’s favorite sayings was, ‘It doesn’t hurt to be nice.’ Students and staff could contribute to a coin drive this week with all proceeds benefiting the new athletic scholarship in Mr. Burch’s name at Rockbridge County High School.”
Walters said that the district hopes to continue this celebration in the future.
“Overall, it was a great day, and we look forward to planning next year’s event,” she said.
