Randy Leech was awarded a $700 scholarship during the annual National 4-H Congress in Chicago. The 19-year-old Virginia Tech student was one of six national winners in the 4-H electric program. - Natural Bridge District Supervisor David C. Loughhead informed the Rockbridge Board of Supervisors that he was resigning effective Dec. 1. - Lewis and Audrey, the Singing Cherokeans from the Cherokee Reservation in North Carolina, were making appearances at the Mack’s store in Lexington.

Under new rules in the state fire code, live Christmas trees were prohibited in most facilities including nursing homes, jails, restaurants, churches and hotels. - Glasgow Town Council instructed town attorney Tommy Simons to proceed with filing the necessary legal documents in circuit court to have the judge declare the old Blue Ridge Tea Room a public nuisance, clearing the way to demolish the derelict property. - Rockbridge County School officials learned that the division’s composite index – a statistical measure used by the Virginia Department of Education to determine a locality’s ability to pay for public education – was slated to rise. This meant that the county would be paying a greater share of operating its schools.
