Nov. 27, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: I am a mail subscriber to your paper and was driven to respond to your “What Do You Think?” online poll topic about the preferred timing for one’s home Christmas decorating.
When I was growing up more than four decades ago and delivering the major daily afternoon newspaper, a neighbor of mine living down near the other end of the block that ended directly across the street from where the front door to my home was happened to be the local fire chief for the entire city fire department.
I went by their home to collect the monthly payment for their weekend morning editions of the newspaper as they weren’t subscribing for the afternoon weekday editions. It was Christmas Eve and the family were there starting the decorating of their own Christmas tree, more than likely because the 25th is the “first day of Christmas” as well as because it was common sense fire safety not to have any flammable Christmas decorations around the house any earlier than was absolutely necessary, i.e., Dec. 24th!
Your poll topic never even bothered to take into consideration the choice of “as late as is possible to begin decorating, even on December 24th, Christmas Eve.”
And a happy holiday season to all in Lexington and neighboring Rockbridge County.
