Twenty-four hour banking came to Lexington with the installation of an automated teller machine at the First National Exchange Bank on Nelson Street. - Federal approval was received for Lexington’s cable television system. The building of a receiving tower for the system on top of the city’s filtration plant would be the first phase of the system’s construction. - Two new services allowing for the use of car telephones and pagers were being planned for the Rockbridge area. Dr. Wayne Raborn of Lexington was spearheading the effort to obtain permits and certifications for these services.

A Washington and Lee University senior hit the gas instead of the brakes and crashed her 1996 Subaru into the Beyond Video store. - The W&L geology department confirmed that the shaking Rockbridge area residents felt was indeed a mild earthquake, which originated a short distance from Richmond. - The story of 9-year-old Christopher Moore and his impending kidney donation from Hubie Hartless touched the hearts of many in the Rockbridge area, with cakewalks and fun runs planned to raise money for his medical expenses.
