Saturday, Dec. 9 -- The Rockbridge County and Parry McCluer high school girls basketball teams both suffered defeats on the second day of the Fighting Blues' Jaden Baker Tournament in Buena Vista.
Northside knocked off the Wildcats 54-29, while Rappahannock County collected a 38-20 win over the Blues.
In the early game, Ameia Bratton tallied 20 points and Na'Kamiyah Martin added 16 to lead the Vikings (2-3) to the victory. Ruby Goodhart tallied 10 points to pace the Wildcats (0-4).
Northside used a big run to start each half in crafting the lopsided win. The Vikings opened the game on a 13-0 spurt, holding RC off the scoreboard until Parker Dameron's basket at the 6:27 mark of the second quarter, and they also notched the first 14 points of the second half to build up an insurmountable 42-13 lead.
Zarie Hardy chipped in 10 points for Northside, and Taylor Jones finished with five markers. Brooklyn Beverley scored five points for the Wildcats, while Sadie Moore, Emma Clark and Des Butler scored four points apiece for RC.
In the nightcap, Rappahannock County -- the defending Class 1 state champion -- led wire-to-wire against the Blues. Chloe Jenkins tallied 15 points and Summer Shackelford recorded 13 as the Panthers improved to 4-0. Victoria Hamilton scored nine points for the Blues (2-1), and Payton Emore added six markers.
Rappahannock County jumped out to a 12-3 advantage late in the first quarter, going on to stretch the margin to 19-5 midway through the second frame. PM trailed by double digits for most of the second half, but the Blues rallied to pull within 29-20 on a pair of Hamilton free throws with 4:03 to go. However, those would prove to be the last points of the night for the home side, as the Panthers closed the contest with a 9-0 stretch.
Following the game, Shackelford was selected as the tournament's most valuable player. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Jenkins, Hamilton, Bratton and Goodhart.
Both RC and PM open up district play this week. The Wildcats will play host to Broadway on Tuesday, while the Blues visit Narrows on Wednesday. Junior varsity action begins at 5:30 p.m. on each night.
