The Rockbridge Area Relief Association (RARA) received $2,700 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation to help feed neighbors in their time of need this year. RARA used this grant to ensure shoppers in the Neighborhood Grocery have access to sufficient protein through quality meats.
“Meat has been especially difficult to source this year,” said Shadrey Sands, RARA programs manager. “With the support of the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation, we can consistently offer the items our clients want.”
RARA also distributed Food Lion gift cards to shoppers in November to help offset the cost of Thanksgiving. Thanks to the store’s bulk discount for non-profits, they distributed 605 cards valued at $14,550. While they gave away frozen turkeys during the pandemic, RARA opted for gift cards this year so that each family could choose whatever food makes their holiday special. RARA also partnered with Campus Kitchen at Washington and Lee University to distribute cards at their joint mobile food pantries.
The Rockbridge Area Relief Association’s Neighborhood Grocery is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. RARA also offers scheduled pick-up times and limited deliveries.
