The Rockbridge County High School wrestling team suffered a 45-33 loss in a dual meet at Greenbrier East in West Virginia on Tuesday of last week.
The Wildcats came close to winning, but lost two bouts in the final seconds that they had been leading. RC also had to forfeit one bout and had a few wrestlers that were battling sickness. “It was definitely a winnable match for us,” said RC head coach Mike Wood.
“Greenbrier wrestled well, but we wasted a couple opportunities where we were winning some matches,” added Wood.
Wood said several of his underclassmen stepped up to win their bouts, including juniors Kellan Dorey (190-pounds), who missed last season with an injury, and Gabriel Wade (215). “They were a nice surprise,” said Wood.
With eight starters out sick, the Wildcats opted not to travel to compete in the Turner Ashby Holiday Tournament in Bridgewater over the weekend.
Tonight, Wednesday, the Wildcats will hold their first home meet when they face Roanoke Catholic and possibly another opponent. Wrestling will start at 6 p.m.
