A twin-engine mail plane on a routine flight from Richmond to West Virginia crashed in a remote mountainous area near Millboro in Bath County. - The biggest snowstorm in several years dumped up to a foot of snow on the area closing schools and canceling many activities. -A bee hive with a large cache of honey and an active swarm of bees was disturbed when a dead yellow locust tree was cut down in the yard of the Rockbridge Area Presbyterian Home.

The Buena Vista Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was considering buying land on Thornhill Road for a new church. - The Natural Bridge Zoo was under investigation again when two Asiatic bears were killed after they escaped their enclosure when an employee failed to lock the cage properly. - Pearl Wapner, a second grader at Effinger Elementary School, wrote about celebrating Chanukah with her family in The News-Gazette’s annual children’s holiday writings feature. “I am glad that I am a Jew,” she said, “I’m glad that I’m not the only Jew in the school.”
