PM Grapplers Split Duals

The Parry McCluer High School wrestling team split a pair of duals, defeating Giles and falling to Alleghany, in a home tri-meet last Wednesday in Buena Vista.

There was a large turnout of fans, with both high school and middle school matches going on at the same time.

In the first dual, the Fighting Blues overcame Giles 48-23. Alleghany then beat Giles 48-30.

The Blues finished the night with a 48-36 loss to Alleghany, a Class 3 school competing against smaller Class 1 schools. Alleghany merged with Covington High School entering this school year and picked up some Covington athletes.

“I think we wrestled well,” said PM head coach Jeremiah Brockenbrough. “We let the Alleghany one get away from us. Hindsight 20/20, it was a good dual match. It’s always good to wrestle them. It’s always fun to watch.”

Blues going 2-0 were Clyde Vassar (106-pounds), Cyler Driscoll (120), Jordan Brockenbrough (126), Jacob Shafer (138), Jackson Brockenbrough (144) and Kaiden Conner (190). Driscoll and the Brockenbrough brothers pinned their opponents. Jackson Brockenbrough was able to go down a weight class after wrestling at 150 the first two weeks of the season.

Coach Brockenbrough also praised freshman Bobby Crowe (175), who lost both of his bouts but wrestled hard. “He’s still learning what he’s doing,” said Brockenbrough.

Today, Wednesday, the Blues will wrestle in a quad meet at Riverheads , with Fluvanna County and Spotswood also competing, starting at 6 p.m.
