With just seven grapplers competing, the Parry Mc-Cluer High School wrestling team defeated Spotswood and lost to Riverheads and Fluvanna County in a quad meet last Wednesday at Riverheads.
The Fighting Blues, who were missing five wrestlers out with the flu, fell to fellow Class 1 school Riverheads 54-24. PM head coach Jeremiah Brockenbrough noted that, even though the Blues gave up 30 points due to forfeits, they won five of the seven bouts they wrestled.
PM then faced two larger Class 3 schools, losing to Fluvanna County 34-30 and beating Spotswood 30-18.
Stepping up for the Blues was sophomore Clyde Vassar, who moved up a weight class to 113-pounds and went 3-0.
Reviewing the quad, Brockenbrough said, “It turned out well. It was a good night for us. I think everybody thought they were going to pound us.”
The Blues will return to action on Thursday and Friday when they travel to Lynchburg for the Heritage Battle of the Belts.
PM will then compete in a quad meet at Rockbridge County, with Bath County and Rustburg also wrestling, next Wednesday, Jan. 3, at 6:30 p.m.
