The Rockbridge County Farm Bureau Women’s Leadership Committee recently entered the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation’s 2023 hay bale decorating contest.
When the winners were announced at the recent Virginia Farm Bureau Convention in Virginia Beach, the entry from Rockbridge titled “Come on Barbie, Let’s Go Farming In Rockbridge” won first place in the Stars of Agriculture category, netting a trophy and cash prize. The display capitalized on the national attention on Barbie produced by this summer’s movie.
The competition is open to anyone, including Farm Bureau members, farmers markets, farmrelated businesses, student groups, community groups, individuals and county Farm Bureaus from across the state. The competition is designed to show creativity and open up discussions about agriculture.
Entries had to be made from small square bales, large square bales and round bales of hay. The competition is in its ninth year. There were 59 entries in this year’s competition.
The local entry was designed and built by the Women’s Leadership Committee members and placed in front of the local Farm Bureau office on U.S. 11 north of Lexington to draw attention to local agriculture, and, indeed, became a big tourist draw, with people stopping to take their photo in front of the display this fall.
