Brendan Perry is the newest appointee to the Lexington City School Board, thanks to a 5-0 vote at last Thursday’s City Council meeting.
Perry, who is the director of MEP Services at Washington & Lee University, was one of three candidates who applied to fill the seat that was held by School Board Chair Tim Diette, who recently resigned from the Board.
Perry has lived in Lexington for six years and has two children in the city school system. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and graduated from Forsyth County Schools in Georgia.
In his application for the seat on the School Board, Perry said that he was “interested in being part of the school board to help provide thoughtful leadership.”
Perry was formally appointed to fill the remainder of Diette’s term which, on paper, runs through June 30, 2025. However, that seat is one of three, along with seats held by continued from page 1 Tammy Dunn and Sandra Hayslette, that will come up for election next fall, marking the beginning of a transition from an appointed school board to an elected school board. The other two seats, which are currently held by Michael Saunders and Katherine Shester, will reach the end of their terms next June and will be filled by appointments by city council. Those seats will be elected for the first time in the fall of 2026.
Chuck Smith made the motion to appoint Perry to the School Board and Leslie Straughan provided the second. David Sigler was not in attendance at the meeting.
