The year ended on a soggy note as heavy rains fell on ground already saturated by melting snow. Va. 130 was under water at the Maury River bridge as was Va. 631 at Furr’s Mill. -At least nine area rescue squads and a state police helicopter participated in the search for a Roanoke College student whose kayak capsized in the James River. -“No parking” signs were being eliminated in certain portions of Lexington’s downtown business district and replaced by painted yellow curbs. This experimental measure was implemented to improve the appearance of the downtown by removing as many signs as possible.

In a letter to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, Lexington City Council expressed its concerns about the pending demolition of the Virginia Military Institute’s post surgeon’s house. However, council would not seek a delay in VMI’s plans to raze the structure to make room for the expansion of Crozet Hall. - After 14 months in business, Buena Vista’s Galaxy Foods shut its doors. Management said lack of community support figured into the abrupt closing. - Professional wrestling superstar Marcus “Buff” Bagwell made an appearance to the Parry McCluer Middle School gymnasium to help raise money for a Buena Vista family that recently suffered significant losses in a house fire.
