The Rockbridge County High School boys basketball team suffered a 67-40 road loss to Valley District rival Harrisonburg on Tuesday of last week.
The Wildcats (1-6 overall, 1-2 district), who were coming off a 79-75 win over East Rockingham the previous Friday, struggled against the tall and athletic Blue Streaks, who improved to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the district.
“We didn’t play well,” said RC head coach Rob Winfield, noting the Wildcats were battling injuries and sickness. “Their length and their ability to switch defensively hurt us. We’ve just got to have a better game plan.”
Harrisonburg led 30-22 at the half and then outscored the Wildcats 20-9 in the third quarter to pull away before outscoring RC 17-9 in the fourth quarter.
Coming back from an injury, Tiberius Fields led Harrisonburg with 30 points, while Latham Fields added 11 points.
Sam Ballstaedt led the Wildcats with 11 points, sinking three 3-pointers, while Henry Lambert added 10 points. Milo Mulitalo scored eight points, and Luke Eversole chipped in four.
The Wildcats were scheduled to play in the Titan Basketball Invitational at Hidden Valley High School in Roanoke last Thursday and Friday. Due to the newspaper’s early Christmas deadline, the story on the tournament will be in next week’s edition.
Today, Wednesday, the Wildcats will play host to rival Parry Mc-Cluer, with the varsity game scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The day will start with the junior varsity girls’ game at 1 p.m., followed by the JV boys’ game at 2:30 p.m. and the varsity girls’ game at 4 p.m. The Wildcats will begin the new year with a nondistrict contest at Fort Defiance on Tuesday, starting with junior varsity action at 6 p.m.
