An incoming weather system is expected to bring potentially dangerous conditions to the Rockbridge area over the weekend. According to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service for southwest and west central Virginia, winter precipitation is likely Saturday and Sunday. Travel is expected to be impacted. As of Tuesday, the National Weather Service forecasts a 100% chance of precipitation Saturday with rain, snow and sleet, becoming all snow after 10 on Sat- urday night. The storm system is expected to exit the area Sunday morning.
However, Rockbridge County Fire and Rescue Chief Nathan Ramsey advised that these forecasts may change.
“There’s considerable uncertainty about the type or amounts that we’re going to get,” h e s aid. “ We’re c onfident something will happen, but it’s a little but too early to tell what.”
For those planning on traveling over the weekend, Ramsey emphasized preparedness.
“The biggest thing is to plan ahead. Keep up with the forecast — the VDOT site is constantly updated as conditions change or roads close. If you’re traveling, it’s best to look at your routes ahead of time,” he said.
“I’d say it’s best to stay put, but if you have to travel, make sure you have plenty of gas and means to keep warm.”
