Rockbridge County and Lexington City schools agreed to operate on Daylight Savings Time. This meant that some students would have to meet school buses at the crack of dawn. The recently enacted DST law would go into effect Sunday, Jan. 6. - The annual bird count yielded two pieces of good news – bluebirds were on the increase and the number of starlings was down. In addition, some species, such as the marsh hawk, reappeared in the area for the first time in several years. - Donald P. Palmer became the first customer of the new cable TV system in Lexington.

Lexington’s Parking Management Plan recommended that City Council build a 220-space parking garage on the McCrum’s lot on Jefferson Street between Washington and Nelson Streets. - Doctors Jay and Jane Sailer planned to open the Maury River Family Practice located in the office formerly occupied by Dr. Michael Bisgrove on McCullough Street in Glasgow. -A German machine gun from World War II was part of a collection of firearms stolen in an overnight breakin at the Lexington Antique Center. Several Civil War era rifles and pistols were also missing.
