Dec. 29, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: Arguments over whether Donald Trump attempted to insurrect the American government has now exceeded the normal limit on how long reasonable people should continue to pleasure themselves with fairy tales.
The government of the United States cannot be insurrected. Insurrection does not even apply to constitutional republics, especially those demonstrating democratic features.
The U.S. government on Jan. 7, 2021, was the exact same government as it was on Jan. 5. Nothing changed, even though a rowdy crowd ran a bit loose ventilating their grievances because their candidate lost. Freedom of Assembly is a First Amendment civil right. When it is stretched into civil disobedience, it still falls short of an insurrection.
Let’s save the insurrection rhetoric for kingships and dictatorships. These are the only forms of government that might be overthrown by insurrectionists. DON HENKE Goshen
