The Parry McCluer girls basketball team cruised to a 60-21 home win over Pioneer District rival Highland County on Friday night in Buena Vista. It was the third consecutive win for the Fighting Blues (8-3 overall, 3-0 district).

In the first quarter, the Blues quickly took an 18-4 lead, and they continued their dominance over the Rams (0-5, 0-2) for the rest of the game. The Blues piled up points in the second quarter, going into halftime up 36-10.

“The effort was there, and overall it was a good team win,” said PM head coach Adam Gilbert. “I really thought we were in to play tonight.”

Victoria Hamilton led the Blues with a seasonhigh 23 points, seven rebounds and three steals. “I think tonight was still a team win,” said Gilbert. “Everyone chipped in and contributed to the game.”

The Blues also had their highest point total of the season. Previously, in the season opener on Nov. 27, PM had its highest point total in a 53-13 win over Altavista.

Payton Emore scored 13 points and led the Blues with five assists and four steals. Tatyana Turner scored nine points and pulled down six rebounds, while Natalie Mohler had nine points and two steals. Zalea Good led Highland with seven points.

Gilbert complimented the performance of the Rams. “We didn’t give them many shots, but the ones that we did, they made,” he said. “They played very hard and were scrappy.”

The Blues were scheduled to play at Nelson County on Monday before playing host to Bath County last night. They’ll continue district action at home against Craig County on Friday, starting with the junior varsity game at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, in games rescheduled due to inclement weather last Saturday, the Blues will play host to rival Rockbridge County, with the 4 p.m. varsity game following the 1 p.m. JV girls’ game and the 2:30 p.m. JV boys’ game between the two schools. The varsity boys’ game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
