The Rockbridge Cattlemen’s Association invites cattle producers and their supporters to its annual meeting with dinner and an informative talk on the U.S. and Virginia cattle markets in 2024 and 2025. The program will be held Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 6 p.m. in the Appomattox Mezzanine of the Virginia Horse Center. The cost of the program is $20 per person and includes a supper of beef chili and baked potatoes. Folks wishing to attend should call or text Tom Stanley at (540) 588-0241.
Butch Foster is a cattle producer and a marketing specialist with the Virginia Cattlemen’s Association. A native of Southwest Virginia, Butch has extensive experience marketing Virginia cattle into the Northeast and the Corn Belt. Butch will lead a discussion of current market issues for Virginia feeder cattle and offer perspectives on opportunities regional and nationally for Rockbridge cattle over the next two years.
Cattle supplies in the US are down and slaughter of breeding age cows has been above five-year average levels for some months. The tighter supply of beef available to consumer markets has been supportive of prices. Uncertainty in the upper limit of prices come from consumer resistance to higher beef prices and other proteins (chicken and pork) competing for consumer attention. Plan to attend the meeting Jan. 16 to gain perspective on these issues, other factors impacting our local markets for cattle, and for a time of good fellowship and idea-sharing.
