Jan. 4, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the continued veneration of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson by the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Daughters of the Confederacy and their comrades. While I respect the importance of understanding our nation’s history, it is imperative that we critically assess the actions of historical figures, particularly those who chose to betray their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States.
Robert E. Lee, once a respected figure in the Union Army, took a path that led to his betrayal of the very principles he had sworn to protect. His decision to join the Confederacy and fight against the United States during the Civil War cannot be divorced from the fact that he broke his oath and became a traitor to the Union. It is concerning that the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Daughters of the Confederacy continue to venerate him without acknowledging the broader implications of his actions.
Similarly, Stonewall Jackson, though admired for his military prowess, fought against the principles of unity and equality that our nation aspires to uphold. It is essential to recognize that historical figures must be assessed within the context of their actions and the consequences of those actions.
As a community, we must strive for a nuanced understanding of history that acknowledges the complexities of the past. Venerating individuals who chose to betray their allegiance to the United States sends a troubling message about the values we uphold. It is crucial that we engage in open dialogue and reevaluate the symbols and figures we choose to honor, ensuring that our reverence aligns with the principles of unity and justice.
Let us work towards fostering an environment that encourages historical accuracy, critical thinking, and a commitment to the principles that bind us together as a nation. THE REV. SUSAN WORRELL Rockbridge County
