‘Let’s Build Those Walls And Put An End To The Tragedy’

Jan. 8, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: I am writing in response to Mr. Carl Pattison’s letter to the editor published Dec. 27 and Mr. Rose’s column published Jan. 3 regarding immigration.

Mr. Pattison argued that calls to secure our southern border are an attack on immigrants and contrary to Christian doctrine. Those calls are nothing compared to the real attacks carried out by the cartels and smullgers that rape women and traffic children trying the enter the U.S. How can you stop that very real human suffering without securing the border, Mr. Pattison? (Spoiler alert: you can’t.)

Mr. Rose informs us that the crisis is not at the border but the people fleeing crime, poverty, and corrupt, autocratic governments. Gee, is that something new? He must have slept through history class. Besides, I thought Vice President Harris was going to solve those root causes when she visited Central America in 2021. I guess that plan didn’t work, or maybe she just wasn’t positioned for success.

Mr. Rose was also upset that Congressman Cline was tying up aid to Ukraine while negotiating for increased border security. I find it more upsetting that he was having to negotiate with the Biden administration just to get it to enforce our immigration laws in the first place. What is allowed to happen at our southern border is an absolute disgrace.

I agree with his quotation of Ronald Reagan that “… if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and the heart to get here.” I am proud of the fact that the U.S. gains over one million new lawful immigrants annually - more than any other country in the world. Let’s build those walls and put an end to the human tragedy at the border. Then let’s open the doors wider for those who will enrich our beautiful melting pot. JOHN MURPHY Lexington
