Thoughts On Trump’s Candidacy

Jan. 8, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: Can you recommend a candidate?

He must demonstrate manliness by divorcing twice, committing adultery in three marriages, fantasizing about sex with his daughter, paying a porn star, lying about it; bragging about assaulting women, then claiming it wasn’t his voice; having the character to separate children from deported parents; diverting money from a charity to pay personal debts; cheating students in a university.

He must have the courage to suffer the largest individual loss in U.S. history for business failures, around $960 million; declare bankruptcy repeatedly; save money stiffing hourly workers on wages; demonstrate initiative with decades-long, systematic fraud in real estate.

He must be ingenious enough to declare election fraud even before voting occurs and organize a nationwide conspiracy of fake electors as a backup plan to seize the presidency; claim the presidency though losing the election, fail over 60 times to prove voter fraud; claim the president is free to commit any crime, even insurrection in violation Article II, the Constitution’s vesting clause; argue the law and facts are whatever suits him.

He must imitate “smart” and “strong” communist dictators: Putin, who murders opponents, Xi, who persecutes Christians, Kim Jung Un, who runs slave labor camps; be willing to deny 1st Amendment freedom to press critics and use martial law against protestors; announce he will personally cancel parts of the Constitution, ignoring required state ratification, not announcing which, promising surprise.

He must dare to endanger national security, removing top-secret materials, including nuclear weapons’ capabilities and weaknesses and war plans so he can show off hotel guests, ask his lawyer to destroy evidence, lie about it, defy a subpoena; declare Nazis and white supremacists “fine people,” pleasing those of like mind.

Concerned about murdered children — “Get over it!”

Is a failed attempt to seize the government by fraud and force really a crime? JOE PETITE Rockbridge County
