Led by seven individuals who went undefeated, the Parry McCluer High School wrestling team won the Matt Bryant Memorial Duals on Saturday at Franklin High School.
After traveling three-and-half hours and staying overnight, the Fighting Blues, one of only three Class 1 schools at the event, held their own against larger schools.
The Blues, who placed second in the duals last year, went 5-0 on Saturday, starting the day by defeating Lancaster 60-24. PM then overcame Southampton 46-36 before cruising to a 60-18 victory over Norfolk Christian. The Blues then took down Windsor 54-24 and finished the day by beating Maury 54-24.
All of the Blues’ wins were by pinfall, and the Blues had 47 total pins at the duals.
Blues going 5-0 were Clyde Vassar (106-pounds), Cyler Driscoll (120), Jordan Brockenbrough (126), Jackson Brockenbrough (150), Junior Convers (165), Bobby Crowe (175) and Kaiden Conner (190).
PM’s Bradack Smith (113) went 4-1, and Timmy Lesher (285/heavyweight) wrestled six times and went 4-2. Blues going 2-3 were Scottie Garrett (144) and Brad Spinner (215).
Pleased with his grapplers, PM head coach Jeremiah Brockenbrough said, “They wrestled really hard after a really long wrestling trip. The kids responded. That’s what we’ve got to have, getting close to the postseason.”
The Blues were scheduled to play host for a quad meet yesterday and will travel to the Rural Retreat Invitational on Saturday for a meet that starts at 9 a.m. PM is scheduled to have its final home competition of the season, a dual against Pioneer District rival Bath County, next Thursday, Jan. 25, beginning at 5 p.m.
