Senior Kovyk Chandler broke his own indoor school record in the boys’ 1600-meter run to lead the Parry McCluer High School indoor track and field teams at the Walter Bass High School Invitational on Saturday at Liberty University in Lynchburg.
Chandler placed third in the 1600 in 4:23.93, cutting more than five seconds off his previous school mark.
The PM boys’ 4 X 800-meter relay team qualified by time for the Class 1 and 2 state meet, placing fourth in 8:32.03. Logan Wheelock ran the first leg and handed off the baton to Kovyk Chandler; Josh Cooper took on the third leg and Kebryl Chandler ran the anchor leg.
Chandler, Cooper and Sam Carpenter all competed in the 1000-meter run. Chandler placed fourth in 2:36.97, setting his second school record of the day. Cooper came in 22nd in 2:46.20, qualifying by time for the state meet. Carpenter finished 140th place in 3:09.20. All three runners recorded personal records (PRs).
Joining Kovyk Chandler in the boys’ 1600-meter run were Wheelock, Carpenter and Caden Mason, with all running PRs. Wheelock placed 60th in 4:54.16, Carpenter finished 144th in 5:23.58, and Mason came in 207th in 6:36.17.
The lone PM girl competing was Kyra Lee, who placed 53rd in the 1600-meter run in a PR time of 5:58.7, her first time under six minutes. In the 1000meter run, Lee finished 99th in 3:44.58.
PM had three throwers competing in the boys’ shot put. Griffin Harlow placed 15th with a toss of 42 feet, 7 inches, Rayshan Richardson finished 30th with a throw of 39-5, and firstyear thrower Vincent Wilson came in 67th with a toss of 31-5.
The Blues are scheduled to compete in the St. Christopher’s Indoor Track & Field Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Richmond.
