Jan. 10, 2023 Editor, The News Gazette: I am thankful to N-G columnist Glenn Rose for reassuring us that there is no immigration crisis at our borders. During the last three years, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), over 6 million illegal immigrants have entered the United States from countries around the world. Data from the U.S. Border Patrol and Office of Field Operations show that the average number of encounters under the current administration reached totals of approximately 189,000 per month, more than three times higher than the average of 51,000 per month under the previous administration.
There is no immigration crisis – just an invasion of millions of illegal immigrants on our borders. Mr. Rose had to go back nearly four decades to the Reagan administration to compare illegal immigration figures as a percentage of total population, rather than dealing with current numbers in an effort to justify his opinion. Permit me to remind Mr. Rose that President Reagan said, “A nation that cannot control its borders is not a nation.”
Mr. Rose obviously “sees the world through Rose-tinted glasses,” which according to Quora [an information sharing platform] conventionally means that he has an unrealistically favorable perception of a situation, person, or relationship. More precisely, he is considering something with a pre-disposed attitude of idealism or romance, and not realistically/critically. GLENN MON Rockbridge County
