Monday, Jan. 22 – High school basketball fans will have a full menu of games to watch this weekend while supporting a noble cause at the 10th annual Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout this Friday and Saturday at Rockbridge County High School.
All four local high school teams will participate in the event, which is presented by ALCOVA Mortgage and Rock Hardwoods, with many other sponsors contributing, and is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The event consists of 12 games, one more than last year, showcasing some of the best basketball players in the Mid-Atlantic Region, as well as several from Kansas. In the first nine years, Rock the Ribbon raised about $94,000.
Day passes for Rock the Ribbon are $10 and can be purchased at the gate, with children 10 and under getting in free. Spectators can come and go as they please. Concessions and t-shirts will be sold.
There will be four games on Friday and eight games on Saturday. “It should be a great weekend,” said Rock the Ribbon founder and director Travis Patterson.
Starting the action during the school day on Friday at 1 p.m. will be the Rockbridge County boys, with a spirited section of home fans expected as they play host to Eastern Mennonite. Through last week, the Wildcats were 2-14, while Eastern Mennonite, based in Harrisonburg was 11-4.
The next Friday game will be between the Alleghany and Fort Defiance girls at 5:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., the prestigious Oak Hill Academy boys of Mouth of Wilon, Va. will take on Blue Ridge School. The nightcap on Friday will be at 8:30 p.m. between Life Prep Academy of Park City, Kan. will face Moravian Prep of Hudson, N.C.
Saturday’s action will start with three games involving local teams. The RC girls (1-15) will begin the day when they play host to Salem (13-1) at 10 a.m.
At 11:30 a.m., the Parry McCluer girls (11-3), who were Pioneer District champions last year, will face Gretna (5-9). The PM boys (11-3), who were Pioneer District runners-up last year, will then take on Gretna (5-8) at 1 p.m.
The fourth game on Saturday is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., with the Spotswood and Floyd County girls facing off. In the next game, slated for 4 p.m., the East Rockingham boys will take on Floyd County. At 5:30 p.m., Moravian Prep will face Blue Ridge School, and the next game will be between Oak Hill Academy and Life Prep Academy. The final game of the weekend will be between the Alleghany and Fort Defiance boys, scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
