Continuing to struggle against the defensive press, the Rockbridge County High School girls basketball team suffered a 63-23 road loss to Valley District rival Broadway on Saturday afternoon.
It was the ninth consecutive loss for the Wildcats (1-15 overall, 0-7 district), while Broadway (12-4, 5-2) captured its sixth consecutive win. When the teams met on Dec. 12 in Lexington, Broadway broke away from a game that was close early on to win 54-19.
“The press just bothered us again,” said RC coach Darrell Plogger. “The first quarter killed us, and the third quarter killed us.”
The Wildcats actually outscored the Gobblers in the second quarter, but Broadway then pulled away in the third quarter.
Broadway’s Wren Wheeler outscored the Wildcats by herself, making eight 3-pointers on her way to 35 points.
Abby Bouchard led the Wildcats with seven points and had four blocks and two steals, while Ruby Goodhart chipped in six points and five rebounds, and Parker Dameron grabbed five boards.
RC struggled to take care of the ball, committing 25 turnovers, and shot just 31 percent (9-of-29) from the field.
The Wildcats were scheduled to play host to East Rockingham on Friday, but that game was postponed due to inclement weather. RC was slated to play at Harrisonburg last night. Today, Wednesday, the junior varsity team is scheduled to play host to Salem at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, in the 10th annual Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout, the Wildcats’ varsity team will play host to Salem at 10 a.m. RC will return to district action at home against Spotswood on Tuesday, starting with the JV game at 5:30 p.m.
