Lewis F. Powell, associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, addressed the Founders’ Day convocation at Washington and Lee University. Of Robert E. Lee, Powell said: “He was far too perceptive not to comprehend the basic problems of reuniting a nation torn apart by four years of perhaps the bloodiest civil war in history. He knew perfectly well that ultimate hope lay in reconciliation.” -A fire destroyed a major part of Hardwood Lumber Corp. at Natural Bridge Station. Six trailers, the sawmill and related equipment were all lost in the blaze. - Tim Hickman was named Photographer of the Year in the recent Virginia News Photographers Association annual competition.

Rockbridge County Circuit Court Judge George E. Honts announced his retirement after 21 years on the bench. - Kappa Alpha hoped to purchase Mulberry Hill, the stately home built in 1801 near the Liberty Hall ruins, and make it the fraternity’s new national headquarters.
