Saturday, Jan. 27 -- Led by Payton Emore’s game-high 21 points, the Parry McCluer High School girls basketball defeated Gretna 57-33 in the 10th annual Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout on Saturday at Rockbridge County High School.
Winning their ninth consecutive game, the Fighting Blues improved to 13-3, while the Hawks fell to 6-11.
Gretna came out of the gates aggressive with a full-court press, but the Blues were prepared and pushed the tempo in the first quarter, leading to many transition baskets, as the offense exploded for 27 points.
PM’s defense remained strong throughout the contest, holding Gretna to around eight points a quarter.
Shakira Jones led Gretna’s offense with 20 points, as she and Emore were named to the all-tournament team.
Also stepping up for the Blues were Natalie Mohler with 10 points, Victoria Hamilton with seven, and Kayleigh Ramsey with six.
The Blues will return to action on Monday when they play host to nondistrict rival Nelson County, starting with junior varsity action at 5:3 p.m. Before the varsity game, the Blues will honor their three seniors: Emore, Addisen Roberts and Tatyana Turner.
