Parry McCluer High School senior Kovyk Chandler broke his own school record in the boys’ 3200-meter to lead local indoor track and field athletes at the Bulldog Invitational on Saturday at Liberty University.
Chandler placed second in 9:23.67, breaking his previous record of 9:28.12 by more than four seconds. He trailed only Abingdon’s Rives Boltwood, who won in 9:18.79. Chandler’s time was his fastest overall for the distance in both indoor and outdoor track.
Also racing in the boys’ 3200-meter run for PM was Logan Wheelock, placing 17th in a personal-record (PR) time of 10:18.57.
The Blues had four runners in the boys’ 1600-meter run. Kebryl Chandler led the way, placing 21st in 4:32. Teammate Josh Cooper finished 42nd in 4:38.93. Blues following Cooper were Sam Carpenter (207th, 5:20.85) and Caden Mason (301st, 6:41.83). Both Cooper and Carpenter produced Prs. In the boys’ 1000-meter run, Carpenter finished 201st in 3:10.82.
For the PM girls, Kyra Lee placed 19th in the 3200-meter run in 12:53.87. The PM girls’ lone thrower was Kamilah Richardson, who placed 13th in the shot put with a toss of 30-5.5.
Griffin Harlow led the PM throwers, placing 10th in the boys’ shot put with a toss of 42 feet, 7 inches. Also competing for the PM boys were Rayshan Richardson, whose throw went 40-2.25, and Vincent Wilson with a toss of 33-5.
Rockbridge County also competed at the meet, with most of the Wildcats recording Prs. The RC girls won the sprint medley relay in 5:01.12, beating runner-up Washington Latin Public Charter High School by more than six seconds. Team members were Lola Mulitalo (200 meters), Evelyn McClung (200 meters), Libba Erskine (400 meters) and Anna Nye (800 meters).
Erksine led the Wildcats in the girls’ 300-meter dash, placing 216th in 50.36 seconds, and teammate Lyda Kendall finished 272nd in 54.59.
Running for the RC boys in the 300-meter dash were Konner Orebaugh (239th, 41.02), John Brooke (271st, 42.05) and Ethan Drake (333rd, 45.69).
In the boys’ 1600-meter run, RC competitors were Fisher Howald (134, 5:03.29), Trenten Cash (202nd, 5:20.04) and Ethan Erskine (281st, 6:01.49), with all recording Prs.
The Wildcats will play host for the Valley District meet on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Virginia Military Institute’s Corps Physical Training Facility in Lexington. If not already qualified by time or distance, the top six individuals and top three relay teams advanced to the Region 3C meet, which is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 10 at Heritage High School in Lynchburg. Admission to the district meet is $7.
The Blues will send their throwers to compete at a meet in Roanoke this weekend, then they’ll have the next couple of weeks to prepare for the Region 1C and 2C meet on Friday, Feb. 16 at Roanoke College’s Kerr-Cregger Field House in Salem.
