The Parry McCluer High School wrestling team defeated Bath County 46-36 to defend its Pioneer District title at home on Thursday night in Buena Vista.
Blues winning their bouts on Thursday, including those winning by forfeit, were Clyde Vassar (106-pounds), Bradack Smith (113), Cyler Driscoll (120), Jordan Brockenbrough (126), Jackson Brockenbrough (150), Junior Convers (165), Kaiden Conner (190) and Timmy Lesher (285/heavyweight).
Of those who wrestled, Smith pinned Bath’s Samantha Horne in 1:06, and Driscoll pinned Mackenzie Riley in 1:06, Jordan Brockenbrough pinned Emily Robertson in 1:50, Jackson Brockenbrough pinned Ethan Bryant in 3:56. Convers then defeated Jeremy Burns in an 11-3 major decision, and Conner pinned his opponent in 2:39. Lesher pinned Asa Altizer in 4:54.
The Blues were missing two wrestlers, Jacob Shafer (132) and Bobby Crowe (175), out with injuries. Before the dual, the Blues honored their lone senior, Scottie Garrett, who wrestled at 144-pounds.
Blues Eighth At Glenvar Led by Jackson Brockenbrough’s second-place finish, the Blues placed eighth of 17 teams at the Highlander Invitational on Saturday at Glenvar High School in Salem. The Blues had five wrestlers who earned medals by placing in the top six.
At 150, Jackson Brockenbrough pinned Glenvar’s Braxton Lavoie in the semifinals in 3:23. In the finals, Brockenbrough lost to Grundy’s Adrian Gordon in a 4-0 decision.
Blues placing third were Driscoll (120) and Jordan Brockenbrough (126). Driscoll was pinned by Rural Retreat’s Gabe Crewey in 1:33 in the semifinals, but he bounced back by defeating Cave Spring’s Nathaniel Muncy in a 6-0 decision. Brockenbrough was pinned by Grundy’s Blake Broyles in 3:08 in the semifinals, but he battled back in the consolation bracket and beat Rural Retreat’s William Rose with a 5-3 sudden victory in overtime. Also earning medals for the Blues were Vassar (fourth, 106) and Convers (fifth, 165).
The Blues scored 95 points as a team to finish just ahead of Salem (ninth, 93.5) and Giles County (10th, 83). Grundy won the tournament with 270.5 points, while Rural Retreat placed second with 187.5, and Cave Spring (164) finished third. Completing the top seven were Grayson County (149.5), Northside (124.5), Glenvar (114) and Hidden Valley (106).
The Blues will play host for the Region 1C tournament on Saturday, Feb. 10, at PM, starting at 10 a.m. At last year’s regional tournament at Fort Chiswell, the Blues placed third, behind Grayson County and Galax.
