Rock the Ribbon: $100,000 In 10 Years

The Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout surpassed the $100,000 mark in its 10th year as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

The event, presented by ALCOVA Mortgage, consisted of 12 high school basketball games last Friday and Saturday at Rockbridge County High School.

All four local high school teams competed, as well as prestigious programs from Virginia, North Carolina and Kansas.

The RC boys opened the event with a game that took place during the school day on Friday afternoon. The Wildcats lost 69-56 to Eastern Mennonite. The first three games on Saturday featured three local teams. The RC girls started the day with a 63-25 loss to Salem, and then the Parry McCluer teams both defeated Gretna, with the Blues’ girls winning 57-33 and the boys earning a 69-65 victory in an exciting game against Gretna.

Reflecting on weekend, Rock the Ribbon founder and director Travis Patterson said it went well, with a steady crowd both days. Patterson expressed his gratitude to the sponsors, fans and volunteers that made the weekend run smoothly.

The 2024 Rock the Ribbon was dedicated to Mike Burch and Chucky Burgdorf, who both passed away last year after battling cancer.
