Saturday, Feb. 3 --In its final home game of the season, the Rockbridge County High School boys basketball team defeated Valley District rival Turner Ashby 67-66 in an overtime thriller on Friday night in Lexington.
The Wildcats (3-19 overall, 3-8 district) trailed 33-12 at halftime entered the fourth quarter down 47-30, but the 3-pointers started to fall at just the right time for RC, as the teams traded buckets down the stretch.
Henry Lambert, who scored a game-high 23 points, was the X factor for the Wildcats, sinking a huge 3-pointer with 18 seconds left in the fourth to tie the game 59-59. Leading by one in overtime, RC surrendered a foul with three tenths of a second left, sending the Knights (5-16, 0-11) to the line with a chance to win the game. But the loyal RC fans would not let that happen, as both free throw attempts went awry, and the Wildcats escaped with a gutsy win.
With the victory, the Wildcats snapped an eight-game losing streak and completed a sweep of the Knights. When the teams met on Jan. 10 at TA, RC won 61-55.
Before the game, the Wildcats honored their four seniors: Lambert, Milo Mulitalo, Simon Emore, Ian Johnson and Jackson White.
The Wildcats will conclude the season on Tuesday when they travel to Stanardsville to take on district rival William Monroe, starting with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m.
