If you’re a strummer, a fiddler, a singer, or even a hummer looking for a song, there’s a group of similar souls ready to welcome you at Maury River Senior Services.

Maury River Players and Singers gather to make music on Wednesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at 2137 Magnolia Ave. in Buena Vista. They practice a variety of musical selections, which change on a monthly basis. All skill levels on any instruments are welcome. Printed lyrics and chords are provided for each session.

In addition to simply being an enjoyable form of expression, making music is beneficial in many ways as we age. Ability level doesn’t matter. Whether or not you perceive yourself to be a good musician, participating in music reduces stress and improves cognition. It can help build self-identity and strengthen social networks, and even counteract some of the negative effects of aging, such as hearing loss.

Music helps unleash memories for people living with dementia. And, rhythmic cues can promote healing after stroke or other neurological impairments like Parkinson’s disease.

As is the case at any age, learning new musical skills can also result in pride and a sense of accomplishment.

For more information, call Valley Program for Aging Services (VPAS) at (540) 261-7474. But, there is no need to register for Maury River Players and Singers jam sessions. Just drop by!
