Harold Gessell was named the new city manager for Buena Vista, coming from Cocoa Beach, Fla., with 13 years of experience in municipal administration.
- The Holiday Inn on U.S. 11 North was fighting inflation with a $1.99 all-youcan- eat spaghetti supper on Wednesdays and a Friday fish fry for $2.25. - Dr. John F. DeVogt of the Virginia School Board Association attended a hearing of the House Appropriations Committee and urged that no retreat from the state’s new “quality education” be permitted.

Sen. John Kerry was the clear choice of Rockbridge area voters in the Democratic party’s presidential primary. - Bea Maurer, president of the Fairfield tent-making company also called Bea Maurer, was named the Lexington-Rockbridge County Chamber of Commerce’s Business Individual of the Year. - Extensive renovations were underway at the State Theater. Major improvements included stadium seating, new floors and a revamped concession stand.
