‘Spend Money On Something Else’

Feb. 2, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: As a (former) career pilot, it’s difficult to compose all of the reasons not to have another airport incorporated into the global air traffic control system. Pilots want taxpayers to build more airports, while the FAA secretly wants less airports.

Feb. 2, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: As a (former) career pilot, it’s difficult to compose all of the reasons not to have another airport incorporated into the global air traffic control system. Pilots want taxpayers to build more airports, while the FAA secretly wants less airports.

Airports are similar to potholes in our interstate highways: they interfere with the safety of established airways and military oil-burner routes, require major changes and constant revisions to navigation tools, suck enormous amounts of money out of municipal, county, state and federal budgets while stroking the pleasure of only a handful of people who can afford the outrageous costs of planes, maintenance facilities, parts and aviation fuels.

Airports, especially little ones, are like the gardens of a British Queen: pretty and impressive ... but about as necessary as a third car in your driveway.
