‘What About Long-term Costs’ Of Airport?’

Jan. 29, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: I write opposing development of an airport in Rockbridge County. I grant that the cost would be perhaps 2% to the county. However, where does the other 98% originate? Taxpayers ‒ you and me also! These dollars could be better used for educational, drug rehab and prevention, and other humanitarian activities.

Building the airport supposedly will be low cost to the county, but what about long-term costs of personnel to operate and maintain the facility? Access roads? Water? Sewage? Many other incidental costs? How many more jobs will be added to the county payroll, which will cost taxpayers?

It is probable the location would take hundreds of acres of agriculture land out of production and off tax rolls. Agriculture in Rockbridge County is a much larger “economic engine” than airplanes.

There are at least six airports within an easy drive available to travelers and/or recreational fliers. I suggest they patronize those facilities rather than Rockbridge County build one for a small number of residents to use.

I further urge citizens to speak with their supervisors opposing this “movement.” REID MACKY Fifth generation county resident and farmer
