The Rockbridge County High School indoor track and field teams concluded their season Saturday at the Region 3C meet at Heritage High School in Lynchburg. The Wildcats had several strong performances, but none of their athletes advanced to the Class 3 state meet.
In addition to those qualified by time or distance, the top three individuals and top three relay teams advanced to the Class 3 state meet.
Running times were generally slower than most at Heritage’s indoor track, which is 12 laps per mile. The only personal record for the Wildcats was by sophomore Lola Mulitalo, who leaped 14 feet, 1 inch in the girls’ long jump to place 18th.
The top individual finish for the Wildcats came from freshman Celia Jones, who placed seventh in the girls’ 55-meter hurdles in 10.23 seconds. In the 55-meter dash, Jones finished 19th in 7.97 seconds. Also representing the RC girls in the 55-meter hurdles was freshman Abby Harding, coming in 18th in 13.9.
Freshman Anna Nye placed 15th in the girls’ 300-meter dash in 48.69 seconds, while senior teammate Libba Erksine finished 19th in 51.21.
The RC girls competed in two relays. In the 4 X 400-meter relay, the Wildcats placed sixth in 4:49.82. Team members were Mulitalo, Erksine, Nye and sophomore Elsa Kerin-Rice. The Wildcats finished ninth in the 4 X 200-meter relay in 2:05.48 with team members Erksine, Mulitalo, Nye and senior Halina Homiak.
Homiak was the lone thrower for the RC girls, tying for eighth place in the shot put with a toss of 27-7.
The only RC boy competing at the meet was sophomore Fisher Howald, who placed ninth in both of his races, the 1000-meter run in 2:55.91 and the 1600-meter run in 4:59.41.
In the team standings, the RC girls placed 16th of 16 scoring teams with one point, scored by the 4 X 400-meter relay team. Heritage won the meet with 131 points, Western Albemarle (76) placed second, and Rustburg (40) finished third. Rounding out the top five were Brookville (36) and Waynesboro (31).
In the boys’ standings, RC didn’t score any points. Rustburg (89) won, Heritage (66) placed second, and Western Albemarle (60) finished third. Completing the top five were Waynesboro (50) and Brookville (50).
