The Parry McCluer High School boys basketball team positioned itself to play for the Pioneer District regular-season championship with two district road wins last week. The Fighting Blues (18-4 overall, 9-1 district) cruised to an 90-48 win over Bath County on Tuesday of last week before defeating Narrows 83-66 on Thursday.
With the win over Narrows (19-3, 9-1), PM avenged a 54-52 Dec. 12 home loss to the Green Wave. In the first meeting, Narrows made a last-second layup to win.
In the rematch, the Blues broke away from a close game in the second half to put both teams tied at the top of the Pioneer District standings. PM led 38-34 at halftime before outscoring the Green Wave 21-14 in the third quarter to take a 59-48 lead into the fourth quarter, and the Blues maintained the comfortable lead for the rest of the game.
It was the Blues’ first win at Narrows since the 2021-22 season, when PM won the regular-season title.
PM and Narrows, which won the district regular-season and tournament titles last year, were scheduled to face off on Monday night at James River High School in Buchanan to determine the regular-season champion and top seed in the Pioneer District tournament (see separate story for results of Monday’s game).
Regardless of the outcome, the Blues will play host for a district semifinal game tonight, Wednesday, at 7 p.m., with the opponent determined in a quarterfinal game on Monday night. Visit www.thenews-gazette. com for district tournament updates.
