Washington and Lee Swimmers Defend Titles

The Washington and Lee University women’s and men’s swimming teams both won Old Dominion Athletic Conference titles last week at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.

The Washington and Lee University women’s and men’s swimming teams both won Old Dominion Athletic Conference titles last week at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.

In the four-day meet that ended on Saturday, the W&L women won their third consecutive ODAC title, their 16th in the last 17 years and their 33rd in program history. The W&L men won their third straight ODAC title and their 10th in program history.

The W&L women scored 868.5 points to beat runner-up Roanoke College (586.5), while Lynchburg College (576) placed third. The W&L men scored 942 points to defeat runner-up Lynchburg (529), while Roanoke College (512) finished third.

W&L head coach Kami Gardner was named ODAC Coach of the Year for the third consecutive year and the 10th time for the women’s team, and she won the award for the second year in a row and the fifth time for the men’s team. For the W&L women, senior Brynn Martinson was named ODAC Swimmer of the Year for the third straight year. Martinson won 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyle races and was a part of the 200, 400 and 800-yard freestyle relay teams. Also winning individually for the Generals were senior Sophia Rollo (200yard backstroke) and junior Bella Tarbet (200-yard butterfly).

Leading the W&L men with individual wins were freshman Leighton Chapman (100-yard freestyle) and junior Reese Nelson (200-yard butterfly).

Next up the Generals will play host for the Last Chance Meet on Saturday at noon at the W&L Natatorium, giving swimmers one more opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Division III championship meet, which is scheduled for March 20-23 in Greensboro, N.C.
