Kendal at Lexington will host a public lecture featuring Lauren Stull, district ranger for the Glenwood and Pedlar Ranger Districts on the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, on Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. in Kendal Hall on the Kendal at Lexington campus.
The presentation will delve into details surrounding the Matts Creek fire, a significant forest fire that consumed over 11,000 acres last November. It is reported that the fire was “the fourth or fifth largest fire in Virginia’s history.”
The lecture is free and open to the public. Following the event, attendees are invited to a wine reception to continue the dialogue and connect with fellow participants.
Bringing a decade of experience with the Forest Service, Stull has a rich career history, including eight years in her current role and three years as a district ranger in the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina. Her career extends to contributions in Florida and California.
Leading a team of 30 professionals, Stull oversees the management of more than 250,000 acres of national forest land across six counties in Virginia. Under her guidance, the Glenwood and Pedlar Ranger District is celebrated for its recreational offerings, encompassing 100 miles of the Appalachian Trail, an ATV area, five wilderness areas, a national scenic area, waterfall trails, and popular campgrounds. Additionally, the district actively engages in timber/silviculture, prescribed burning, and special uses programs.
Stull earned her bachelor’s degree in forestry and agricultural economics and her master’s in forestry and public administration from Virginia Tech.
