On Jan. 27, members of the Lexington City Schools Chess Club participated in the 2024 ACC Championships, sponsored by the Roanoke City Schools.
For the group of students representing Waddell, several players had great individual performances, with three players finishing in the top 10, but - even more importantly - the Waddell team finished in first place overall. The three players finishing in the top 10 were Rayyan Maktoomi, who finished in second place; Ahmad Hasan, who finished in third place; and Harry Loughhead, who finished in seventh place.
The group representing Lylburn Downing all finished in the top 10 in the individual competition. Alex Eastwood finished in fourth place; Gibson Fox, finished in third place; and Ben Phillips, finished in ninth place.
The LDMS group tied for first place in the team competition. This accomplishment is especially remarkable, because the team competition takes into account the scores of the four players with the highest scores. The three LDMS players scored as many points as a team that was allowed to add four players’ score to determine their team standing.
