The Lexington Woman’s Club recently announced the winners of its annual writing contest held for area students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Students were presented certificates at an awards ceremony held Wednesday evening, Feb. 7, at Lexington Presbyterian Church. This contest is one of several educational endeavors that the club supports in the Rockbridge area.

Students competed with their poetry and short stories in four categories according to their grade in school: Category 1 (grades kindergarten through second); Category 2 (third through fifth grades); Category 3 (sixth through eighth grades); and Category 4 (ninth through 12th grades). The first-place winning entries from both short story and poetry in each category will advance to the General Federation of Women’s Club’s Shenandoah District competition.

The winning students and their schools are as follows: Category 1: Short Story ‒ first place, “Dog and Bear” by Paxton Booher, Rockbridge Christian Academy; second place, “Fall” by Keirra Baul, Central Elementary School; third place, “Fall” by Caroline Nicely, Central.

Category 2: Poetry ‒ first place, “When Day Becomes Night” by Rose Redfern, Waddell Elementary; second place, “Oh Smokey Day” by Peyton Steele, RCA; third place, “Christmas Night” by Alexandra Nikoi, RCA.

Category 2: Short Story ‒ first place, “Long Nights at Work” by Olivia Repair, Mountain View Elementary; second place, “Cat in Space” by Izzabella Aleshire, Mountain View; third place, “Rosie” by Kharlea Mears, Mountain View.

Category 3: Poetry ‒ first place, “My Fishing Trip” by Camden Steele, RCA; second place, “Soccer” by Chase Wallace, RCA; third place, “The Nutcracker” by Araceli Quintero, RCA.

Category 3: Short Story ‒ first place, “Endless Nights” by Hannah Scott, RCA.

Category 4: Poetry ‒ first place, “Anxiety” by Belle Cochran, RCA; second place, “The Warning” by Ben Meads, RCA.

Category 4: Short Story ‒ honorable mention, “The Copycat” by Joey Meads, RCA.
