The Southern Virginia University men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams won the inaugural USA South Championship Meet on Friday at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.
SVU captured the men’s title with 202.5 points to beat runner-up Pfeiffer (112), while Methodist (107) placed third of six teams.
Individually, top performers of the meet were selected based on the amount of points contributed to their team. SVU nearly swept the individual awards as junior Dylan May, a 2020 PM graduate, was named Track Athlete of the Meet, and freshman Andre Lucas earned Field Athlete and Rookie of the Meet. May won three distance races, while Lucas won the long jump and high jump. SVU head coach Kyle Chandler was named Coach of the Meet. The SVU men won seven individual events.
The Knights won the women’s title with 187.5 points, while Pfeiffer (94.5) placed second of seven teams, and North Carolina Wesleyan (69) finished third.
SVU freshman Elyssa Holman, who won the high jump, was named both Field Athlete and Rookie of the Meet, while Chandler was named Coach of the Meet. The SVU women won three individual events and the 4 X 400meter relay.
The SVU teams will next compete in the Division 3 South Region Final Qualifier on Friday and Saturday in Winchester. For more on the conference meet, visit knightathletics.com.
