Sanders To Speak At First Baptist Event

The First Baptist Church in Lexington will continue its celebration of African-American Heritage Month on Sunday, March 3, at 11 a.m. as the church welcomes guest speaker, the Rev. Dr. Boykin Sanders. The service will be followed by an art exhibit and luncheon.

Sanders, an author and theologian, has taught theological courses in seminaries both near and far. Currently, he teaches New Testament studies at the Samuel D. Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University in Richmond. Sanders is a former pastor of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Boston, Mass., and served as senior pastor of the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church in Montgomery, Ala., where Martin Luther King Jr. once preached.

Sanders is an alumnus of ITC in Atlanta, Ga., and received a doctorate in New Testament Studies from Harvard University.

Immediately following the morning service, there will be an art exhibit by Beverly Tucker. The show showcases the heritage of African-Americans through music, with selected paintings of instruments and musicians. The paintings will be on sale and the proceeds will go to First Baptist Church.

The church’s annual complimentary Soul Food luncheon will be held in the downstairs fellowship hall. All are welcome to dress in heritage attire if they like.

For more information, call the church at (540) 463-4854. The Rev. McKinley A. Williams is the pastor.
