W&L’s Lindner Advances
Generals Grapplers Fifth In NCAA Regionals
Washington and Lee University sophomore wrestler Evan Lindner advanced to the NCAA Division III Champ ionships by placing second at 149-pounds at the Southeast Regional Wrestling Championships on Friday and Saturday at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa. The Generals placed fifth of 22 teams.
The top three placers in each weight class earned automatic bids to the NCAA Division III Championships, which will take place next Monday and Tuesday, March 11 and 12, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Lindner suffered his only loss of the tournament in the first-place match to Washington & Jefferson’s Taylor Smith, who is ranked fifth in the region’s weight class. Smith defeated Lindner in a 9-2 decision, and all points were scored in the second and third periods. Lindner reached the finals by beating Averett’s Jesse Alvarado in a 5-3 decision.
Stevens won the team title with 164.5 points, Averett (146.5) placed second, and Roanoke College (145.5) finished third. Completing the top seven were Delaware Valley (118), W&L (102), Lycoming (96.5) and Messiah (94).
Seven Generals earned spots on the podium by placing in the top eight in their weight classes. In addition to Lindner, the others were senior John Ryan Sedovy (fourth, 285), juniors Nic Zamaloff (fifth, 157), David Rubin (seventh, 125) and Jack McCusker (eighth, 184); and sophomores John Santowski (fifth, 197) and Mark Troni (fifth, 165). Sedovy is a 2020 Rockbridge County High School graduate.
